Reducing packaging waste, one order at a time
Our Frustration-Free Packaging programs are designed to produce less waste than traditional packaging. We work directly with thousands of manufacturers to help them redesign their packaging, eliminate waste throughout the supply chain, and ensure products arrive undamaged on customers’ doorsteps. In November, we empowered our fulfillment center packing associates to enhance our Frustration-Free Packaging programs. We rolled out a new packaging feedback button that associates use to provide feedback on a product that may be capable of shipping without additional packaging.
Now that we have an easy way for Amazon associates to provide recommendations, we can partner to reduce packaging waste and improve millions of customers' experiences.
When a pack associate strikes the button, a message is sent to our Customer Packaging Experience Team, flagging a product as one that could be shipped in its own packaging. Our packaging experts then test and certify the product to ensure it will be well protected in transit. If the product gets certified, a new Frustration-Free package is born!
"Amazon associates have a keen understanding of product packaging – they each pack thousands of products every day. Now that we have an easy way for them to provide recommendations, we can partner to reduce packaging waste and improve millions of customers' experiences," says Nikki Haven, CPEX project lead.
Now, associates are helping us minimize our environmental footprint, one box at a time. Over a three month pilot, 20,400 associates from more than 75 fulfillment centers in the U.S. and Canada participated in our trial, resulting in a reduction of over 2.2 million boxes.
