This past week we were proud to celebrate Day 1 in The Spheres. For the past three years, our horticulture team has been busy cultivating a world-class collection of plants. But on Thursday, we welcomed community members, students, local leaders, our greenhouse staff, and the construction teams who are building The Spheres to witness the very first planting inside – an Australian tree fern. The tree arrived from our greenhouse on an Amazon Prime truck and is the first of more than 40,000 individual plants that will form the equivalent of an indoor forest within The Spheres.
As part of this event, we were also proud to welcome teachers, students (and hopefully future horticulturists!) from the Washington Environmental and Adventure School and present them with a $10,000 donation to repair and upgrade their own greenhouse.
There have been many recent studies that show the human brain functions much better when it has a direct connection to nature. The Spheres will provide that direct link to nature – Amazonians can come in to collaborate and innovate together, and Seattleites and other visitors will also get to experience The Spheres through our tour program.
Amazon is proud to call Seattle home and we are excited for the entire community to learn about the individual plants in and around The Spheres and to enjoy this one-of-a-kind project come 2018. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy our new public dog park and the green space spreading coming all around The Spheres in the next few months.
